GENERAL FAQs

If any of your paints or your prep products freeze, are they still ok?
Yes. Our products will work perfectly fine if they freeze, as long as you let our products get back to room temperature before using. For the prep products, shake the bottles well before using. For our paint products, stir really well before using.

Why is it so important to paint your products in thin coats? I've painted quite a bit and a lot of paints I've used don't require this. What is different about your paints?
Paints that contain a high solids percentage and are moisture cured urethanes (like most of our coatings) require thin, covering coats to prevent the coat you are painting from skinning over trapping the escaping solvents below the skin which looks like micro bubbles on the surface. Most traditional paints are a very high solvents (low solids) content and that is why you can paint those in thicker coats because most of the coat is solvent that will evaporate away.

AQUAKLEAN FAQs

Is KBS AquaKlean suitable for use prior to spraying automotive paint?
Yes, you can use KBS AquaKlean to clean a surface before spraying paint. It is a great cleaner and degreaser and will leave a clean surface for painting.

Can I use your KBS AquaKlean in our parts washer?
Yes, you can use KBS AquaKlean in a parts washer. KBS AquaKlean is a concentrated cleaner, so keep that in mind when you are determining the ratio of KBS AquaKlean and water.

RUSTBLAST FAQs

Will my cured undercoating be affected by RustBlast while treating the bare metal?
RustBlast will not disturb any fully cured coatings like your undercoating. You can do the KBS 3 Step System and do not have to worry about the RustBlast or KBS AquaKlean disturbing your undercoating.

Is RustBlast safe if it is gets on wiring, rubber, etc. during the process of using it on a car chassis?
Yes, as long as the contact is casual and the RustBlast is rinsed off with water, RustBlast should not affect your wiring and rubber components.

If I sandblast the surface, can I or should I still do the RustBlast application?Because a clean sandblasted surface (using fresh sand, not recycled sand) is the ideal surface for adhesion with RustSeal and can be prone to surface rust with an application of RustBlast, we recommend applying RustSeal directly to a sandblasted surface. Please be sure to wear gloves when handling the sandblasted piece to prevent finger oils from getting on the surface. With that said, you can apply RustBlast to a sandblasted surface before applying RustSeal, but please be aware that that surface will be more prone to surface rusting if not dried immediately after rinsing the RustBlast off the surface.

How do I minimize flash rust when rinsing the RustBlast off with water?Surface rust can occur when you introduce water to bare metal but this will not affect the KBS 3 Step Rust Prevention or Tank Sealing System. If you want to minimize flash rust, you can simply dry the surface immediately after rinsing it with water. If you just have some light surface rust, please proceed to the next step.

RUSTSEAL FAQs

What is the procedure putting body filler over RustSeal?
There are three effective ways to apply body filler over RustSeal so that the RustSeal and the body filler bond & fuse together.

1) Apply your body filler once the second or final coat of RustSeal is dry-to-the-touch and does not leave a fingerprint (usually 3-10 hours depending on temperature and humidity).
2) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), scuff the RustSeal with 300 grit, then apply your body filler.
3) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), dust the RustSeal with Fusion Self-Etching Primer, let the Fusion cure for 30 minutes, then apply your body filler. You can feel free to choose the method that will work for you.

TANK SEALER FAQs

Can I use the Tank Sealer on a new tank?
The KBS 3-Step Tank Sealer System is absolutely ideal for new tanks. If you leave a new tank uncoated, it will eventually rust leaving you with clogged fuel filters. A very common misconception with sealing new tanks is that you do not need the KBS AquaKlean and RustBlast. New tanks made of new steel are very slick and not an ideal surface for Tank Sealer to stick, so we always recommend KBS AquaKlean and RustBlast to properly clean and etch the surface of the new tank so the Tank Sealer can bite in to the surface and adhere permanently.

DIAMONDFINISH FAQs

Can diamond finish clear be used over rust seal? I'm looking to use rust seal as a colour base coat on some automotive components (steering rack, transmission, differential...etc) and use clear to provide the UV protective layer/topcoat?
We do not recommend putting DiamondFinish Clear over RustSeal because although DiamondFinish Clear is absolutely UV stable, DiamondFinish Clear does not block the UV rays from getting through to the RustSeal. Over an extended period of time, DiamondFinish Clear can delaminate from RustSeal when exposed to prolonged sunlight. We always recommend a solid colour UV stable topcoat paint (such as BlackTop) over RustSeal if RustSeal will be exposed to sunlight.

Can you use DiamondFinish Clear Coat on 1986 fiberglass Bass boat top plate? Has been wet sanded.
Yes. Wipe the fiberglass surface down with KBS AquaKlean. Allow to dry. Then apply the DiamondFinish Clear. It would be best to apply 2-3 coats for a marine application.

What is the recommendation for wet sanding and buffing times on DiamondFinish Clear?
DiamondFinish Clear can be cut and polished as a normal clear coat after 24 hours under normal conditions. Please check out the DiamondFinish Clear Directions and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Do you recommend DiamondFinish Clear for direct to metal applications?Yes, DiamondFinish Clear is specifically formulated for many applications including Direct-to-Metal Applications. DiamondFinish Clear adheres perfectly to ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Can DiamondFinish Clear be used over water-based paint?
Yes, DiamondFinish Clear can be painted over a water-based paint, as long as that coating is fully cured. As always, do a small inconspicuous test area first.

Can DiamondFinish Clear be used over RustSeal?
We do not recommend putting DiamondFinish Clear over RustSeal because although DiamondFinish Clear is absolutely UV stable, DiamondFinish Clear does not block the UV rays from getting through to the RustSeal. Over an extended period of time, DiamondFinish Clear can delaminate from RustSeal when exposed to prolonged sunlight. We always recommend a solid colour UV stable top coat paint (such as BlackTop) over RustSeal if RustSeal will be exposed to sunlight. Please check out the DiamondFinish Clear Directions and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Can DiamondFinish Clear be used over lacquer and enamel paint?
Yes, DiamondFinish Clear can be applied over fully cured lacquer or enamel paints. Please check out the DiamondFinish Clear Directions and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Can DiamondFinish Clear be applied over another coating (like a base coat)?Yes, DiamondFinish Clear can be applied over other coatings that are fully cured. To prep that surface: Clean surface with KBS AquaKlean diluted 10 parts warm water to 1 part KBS AquaKlean. Scuff with 600-1200 grit sandpaper and repeat cleaning process. Rinse & allow to thoroughly dry. Please be sure to read through the complete directions for DiamondFinish Clear.

XTC FAQs

If I paint Harley Sportster exhaust headers with the XTC Primer and XTC paint, will it be okay to do an exhaust wrap after the paint is properly cured?Yes, if you temperature cure the XTC Primer and XTC, you can put an exhaust wrap over it with no issues at all.

May I use XTC xtreme coating on mufflers with light rust?
Yes, you can use XTC on mufflers. Get a coat of XTC Primer down first and then 1-2 coats of XTC.

I will be coating my marine engine with Motor Coater, but have some rust spots on the iron die-cast manifold. How would you recommend I prepare this spot before applying the Motor Coater Engine Paint?
It would be best to clean the entire marine engine with KBS AquaKlean. Then, you can treat the rust spots with RustBlast. After you have cleaned the engine and treated the rust spots with RustBlast, then you will paint the marine engine with Motor Coater.
